Algae typically establishes when chlorine levels have dropped low enough, combined with warmth and sunlight, that it can grow faster than the water's sanitizer can kill it off. By the time a pool is visibly green, the algae population has grown substantially.
Step One: Overwhelming the Algae With Shock Treatment
The first chemical step in recovery is applying a significantly elevated dose of chlorine, often called shock treatment or breakpoint chlorination, well above normal maintenance levels. This high concentration is calculated to overwhelm the existing algae and any organic contaminants consuming chlorine, finally pushing free chlorine levels high enough to actually kill the algae rather than just suppressing it temporarily.
Step Two: Why Dead Algae Doesn't Just Disappear
Once shocked, algae cells die, but they don't vanish immediately. Dead algae cells break apart and become suspended particulate in the water, which is actually why water sometimes looks even more cloudy or grayish right after shock treatment before it starts clearing. This is a normal, expected part of the process, not a sign something went wrong.
Step Three: Physical Removal Through Brushing
Algae that had attached itself to pool walls, steps, and other surfaces needs to be physically brushed loose so it can be captured by the filtration system. Chemical treatment alone doesn't dislodge attached algae from surfaces, this mechanical step is what allows the filter to actually remove it from the pool rather than leaving dead algae clinging to walls where it could theoretically support new growth once conditions favor it again.
Step Four: Extended Filtration Clears the Suspended Debris
With dead algae now suspended in the water rather than attached to surfaces, extended filter runtime, often continuous for a period of days, gradually removes that fine particulate from the water. This is why recovery takes days rather than hours, physically filtering out all the dead algae takes time, even with a properly functioning filtration system.
Step Five: Rebalancing Once the Water Clears
As the water visibly clears, chemistry needs to be rechecked and adjusted. The shock treatment used to kill the algae leaves chlorine levels well above normal maintenance range, and other factors like pH may have shifted during the process. Final rebalancing brings the water into a stable, comfortable, properly sanitized range rather than leaving it at the elevated levels needed for the initial treatment.

Each of these steps depends on the previous one being done correctly and completely. Under-dosing the initial shock, skipping brushing, or cutting filtration time short before all the dead algae has cleared, any of these gaps can leave enough algae or organic material behind for the bloom to partially or fully return within days.
