Pump wear or reduced performance. An aging pump, or one with a failing impeller, may simply not be moving as much water as it used to, which reduces pressure throughout the entire circulation system.

Partially closed or malfunctioning valves. If a valve controlling flow to the returns isn't fully open, or has worn parts preventing full flow, that restricts pressure specifically at the jets even if the pump itself is fine.

Clogged or partially blocked plumbing. Mineral buildup inside pipes, common in areas with hard water, can gradually narrow the internal diameter of plumbing lines, reducing overall flow.

Low water level. If the pool's water level has dropped, it can affect how efficiently the pump draws and circulates water, sometimes showing up as reduced jet pressure.

Checking filter pressure and cleaning it if elevated is a reasonable first step homeowners can do themselves. If jet pressure doesn't improve after a clean filter, that points more toward pump, valve, or plumbing issues that need professional diagnosis.

Weak return jets aren't just less satisfying to swim near, they often indicate reduced overall circulation, which affects how evenly chemicals distribute throughout the pool. Poor circulation can create areas more prone to algae growth, even if the water looks fine on the surface elsewhere.
