What Is Backwashing, and How Much Water Does It Actually Use?

Backwashing is the standard cleaning method for sand and DE pool filters, and it's a process that surprises some homeowners once they realize how it actually works, particularly when it comes to how much water gets used during the process.
How Backwashing Works
Backwashing reverses the normal direction of water flow through the filter, sending water backward through the sand or DE media to flush out trapped debris and dirt that's accumulated during normal filtration. This debris-laden water gets directed out of the system entirely, typically to a drain, rather than being returned to the pool.
Why This Process Requires Reversing Flow
Normal filtration pushes water forward through media, trapping debris as it passes through. Reversing that flow dislodges the trapped material in the opposite direction it was originally caught, flushing it out of the filter system rather than pushing it further into the media where it would just accumulate and eventually clog the system.
How Much Water Backwashing Actually Uses
Backwashing typically uses somewhere between 100 to 300 gallons of water per cycle, depending on filter size and how long the backwash cycle runs. This water comes directly from the pool, meaning water levels will drop somewhat after a backwash cycle and typically need to be topped off afterward.
Why Backwash Duration Matters
Backwashing for too short a time doesn't fully clear debris from the filter media, leaving it still partially clogged even after the cycle. Backwashing for too long wastes more water than necessary without additional cleaning benefit once the water running to the drain has visibly cleared, which is generally the sign the process is complete.
DE Filters Need an Additional Step After Backwashing
For DE filters specifically, backwashing flushes out the old DE powder along with the debris it caught, meaning a fresh charge of DE powder needs to be added back into the system after each backwash cycle for the filter to function properly again.
How Often Backwashing Is Typically Needed
Rather than a fixed schedule, backwashing is generally recommended based on filter pressure readings, typically once pressure rises a certain amount above the clean, baseline reading. This means backwash frequency naturally adjusts to actual debris load rather than following an arbitrary calendar schedule.

Knowing that each backwash cycle removes a meaningful amount of water from the pool helps explain water level drops that might otherwise seem confusing, and reinforces why checking and topping off water levels after backwashing is a normal, expected part of the process rather than a sign of a leak or other issue.
